How Often Should I Get My HVAC (Heating and Cooling System) Serviced?

We recommend having your furnace serviced every year so you do not wake up one day to a cold house.

Some simple tests can show issues before they leave you without heat. Cleaning the flame sensor, changing the furnace filter, cleaning the burners, and checking the amp draw of the fan motors will often stop those breakdowns before you are cold. Looking at these early will also reduce the chance that you are sitting there waiting for parts in the dead of winter.

A heat pump system also needs to be checked once a year. Since the heat pump both heats and cools your home, they tend to work a lot harder than an AC unit. We recommend servicing your heat pump in the fall or spring to make sure it is ready for the upcoming heating or cooling season.

If you need to repair anything we recommend speaking to qualified technicians that will let you know what to repair.

What Does HVAC Mean?

HVAC is simply an acronym for that stands for "heating, ventilation, and air conditioning". All these terms have something in common and that is thermal or temperature control—often referred to as conditioning. Whether you are adding heat or taking it away you are conditioning the space to make it more comfortable.

HVAC installation systems are provided for homes, offices, and even larger commercial spaces like factories. These systems are built to help improve environmental comfort and satisfaction.

It is important to know the three main components of the HVAC system. They are clearly explained below.

1. Heating

The heating system adds warmth using a furnace or boiler. The furnace or boiler work by transporting the hot fluid all around the home to keep the environment warmer than the outside.

Both heating and cooling of the space requires understanding how much heat is lost or gained from the environment. This heat loss or gain is calculated by taking into account the losses through walls, doors, windows, floors and ceilings. Each part is used to calculate the amount of heat needed during the coldest day of the year. Once you have the number of BTU per hour required to keep your house warm you can properly size your furnace or boiler to meet those needs.

2. Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is a term that every homeowner should be familiar with. It simply involves the expulsion of the heat in the environment by blowing in cooler air. This is most often done using the compression, condensing, and evaporation of a refrigerant in an air conditioner. If you reverse the direction of refrigerant flow you can take heat from outside and bring it into the home. This unit is called a heat pump and can operate down to an outside temperature of -10. While a heat pump is highly efficient, electricity costs make it a lot more expensive than natural gas to heat your home.

Air conditioning is very often mistaken for HVAC because it is the most used part of the HVAC system.

3. Ventilation

Ventilation simply involves the circulation of quality air in your home. Ventilation comes in two forms. It can be natural or forced. Natural ventilation is done to fill the interior of the home with enough air to keep it naturally cool. The forced one is done to clean the air in the space for better air quality. Heat recovery ventilators (HRV) use a heat exchanger to recover the heat in the exhaust air and transfer it to the cold incoming air. Some units can recover 90% of the heat you paid for before it is discarded into the outdoors.

4. Humidification

Humidifiers are an important part of conditioning your living space. Not only does it limit the itch and crawling of dry skin, it stops hard wood floors from shrinking. A properly-sized humidifier will also allow you to keep your home at a lower temperature and still feel comfortable. 30C in a dry place like a desert does not feel as hot as 30C in a humid environment due to your body being able to cool itself through evaporation. This works much the same way in your home—19C with 10% humidity will feel much cooler than 19C with 40% humidity.

5. Filtration

Proper air filtration will allow you to be more comfortable in your home. Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis will help keep dust down and limit the allergens within your house. Not changing your furnace filter will restrict the air flow taking heat away from your furnace. If there is not enough heat being removed from the heat exchanger, the high limit will lock out power to the gas valve. This lock out will usually reset as the heat is dissipated by the furnace fan. Short cycling of the burner is a sign of limited air flow across the heat exchanger.

What Does HVAC Maintenance Include?

Having gone through the three main parts of HVAC, it's worth noting that the HVAC services don't end at heating, air conditioning, and ventilation. There are several other services that an HVAC company has to offer you besides heating, cooling, and ventilation and they will depend on your HVAC needs.

The HVAC service or maintenance will include furnace repair, repair of the hot water tank, new furnace installation, air conditioner installation, humidification, dehumidification, and several other technical HVAC services.

What Is the Purpose of the HVAC System?

The purpose of HVAC depends strongly on what the user thinks his/her home needs. The service could be totally about getting more warmth inside the house, getting the heat out, or making the home more conducive and comfortable by ensuring proper ventilation. The bottom line is that whatever service is offered has to result in the best air quality possible 24/7 every day.

How Many Years Does HVAC Last?

After proper installation, follow-up repairs and maintenance, your furnace/heating, air conditioning, and ventilation will still not last forever. However, it can take years before you would need to get it replaced.

Ideally, HVAC lasts for up to 20 years before you would need to change it. This figure can be the same for residential, commercial, and business spaces, but will depend greatly on the level of maintenance. Ensure to find the best company in Calgary to provide every required service from installation to repairs.

Can I Install HVAC Myself Or Do I Need a Professional?

As mentioned earlier, HVAC comprises many features. It goes beyond heating and cooling. Installing HVAC yourself can be done; however, there is specialized knowledge that can be dangerous if not performed properly. Unfortunately, CO poisoning is not uncommon and can result from a faulty HVAC installation.

Having working CO detectors can protect you but not the damage caused to your equipment by operating poorly. A professional has the required technical know-how to inspect, repair, clean, and replace worn-out items in the HVAC unit. This alone can increase the lifespan of the systems and also help it use less energy to help you save money.

For example, if you're installing a new furnace for the first time, you don't want to undermine the services of a professional. From the installation phase down to maintenance, choosing a professional will help get the job done right and potentially provide a warranty on the install.
